Feb 28 1962, the FANITA, a small Mexican fishing boat off the French island of Clipperton, 800 miles East of San Diego, discovered the 10 marooned crew members of the 81 or 72 foot craft, the Monarch, one of them injured. The Monarch capsized at Clipperton for reasons that were not publicly specified. They had been stranded for 3 weeks, surviving on bird's eggs and wild pig meat.The Monarch, valued $100,000 at the time and skippered by Manuel Chula, 55, had left San Diego Jan 16 fully loaded with fuel and food for 6 weeks and manned by a crew of 7. It allegedlly picked up 3 Mexican crew members at some Mexican port. The FANITA was too small to do anything and relayed the news back to the San Diego Tuna Boats Association by radio. The news was forwarded to the Coast Guard and the Navy. The Guided Missile Frigate USS Robison was off the coast of central America, coming from the Atlantic and heading to San Diego when it was ordered to go to the rescue. Finallt March 4th, the Robison delivered entered San Diego with the crew of the Monarch. All the men were in good health and only Antonio Sorreia was injured abandoning ship and broke a foot.
